A deadly explosion hit a Shiite mosque in northern Afghanistan on Friday, the Taliban and witnesses said, AP reports.
The big picture: Taliban chief spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said a “large number” of people were killed and wounded in the blast. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place as people gathered for Friday prayers at the Gozar-e-Sayed Mosque in Kunduz province, per AP.
The Taliban said their special forces were on the scene and investigating the explosion, AP reports.The attack comes as the Taliban contend with a growing threat from ISIS-K militants, who have stepped up their attacks in recent weeks. Several civilians were killed or wounded in a bomb blast at a mosque in Kabul last week, according to Reuters. The Taliban said their forces destroyed an ISIS-K cell following the attack.
